The Joyce name runs deep through Connacht. It's believed to trace back to a Breton name meaning "lord," carried to Ireland by the Normans and settled by Thomas de Jorse in County Galway in 1283. That corner of Galway and Mayo became known as Joyce's Country, and the family became one of the Tribes of Galway, the fourteen merchant families who ran the city's political and commercial life through the medieval period.
The Joyce name is also closely tied to the Irish Traveller community, where it remains one of the most recognised family names in the UK today. That community carries its own distinct culture and history, a nomadic way of life with customs and language that have held firm through generations.
